July 1, 2002 \Established as an independent division from the former Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery-

Throughout the years, the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery of this medical School has been renowned as one of the leading departments in the fields of general thoracic surgery and cardiovascular surgery. With the aim of further increasing the opportunity of activity in those two fields, and also in view of the increase in importance in those fields due to a sharp increase in thoracic diseases as typified by lung cancer, the Clinical Department was reconfigured in 2002 to provide specialized divisions for general thoracic surgery and cardiovascular surgery. On May 1, 2003, the Department of General Thoracic Surgery was established as an independent specialty surgical department from the former Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery.

As its name suggests, the Department of General Thoracic Surgery provides treatments for diseases in all areas of the thorax, except for the heart, large artery, esophagus, and mammary gland. We also work hand-in-hand with the Departments of Respiratory Medicine and Radiology to offer every kind of therapy. Our Department is also active in introducing new remedies, and is one of the leading facilities in Japan in thoracoscopic surgery. The total number of operations in 2004 was 283 \which means that we are one of the top 10 facilities in terms of number of operations.

The faculty and staff of the Department of General Thoracic Surgery also take part in various clinical studies, and achieve outstanding performance in many medical societies in the field of e.g. lung cancer. Our Department is one of the very few facilities throughout the world that is able to perform both thoracoscopic surgery and extended operations through median sternotomy for treating lung cancer. Prognosis after lung-cancer surgery is arguably top class throughout the nation, and the mortality due to surgery is 0.13% which we believe is the lowest in Japan.

We honestly and precisely disclose every piece of information to our patients. We also put much effort in providing informed consent during the perioperative period and respiration-rehabilitation guidance after hospitalization. As a result of our effort, we have succeeded in keeping the average hospitalization period extremely short as 9 days.
