Introduction

The Department of Nephrology was established by the first professor Jyoji Ohno (currently professor emeritus) after the professorship system by organ class was founded in 1969. He was followed by the second professor Hikaru Koide and the third professor Yasuhiko Tomino (currently professor emeritus). At present, the Department has about 80 staff members and undertakes research, clinical activities and training on the topics of IgA nephropathy, diabetic nephropathy, hypertension and renal failure..

The primary concept of the Department management is that the main goal is to foster “good clinicians” who can achieve whole-hearted healthcare. Research directly connected with clinical practice is promoted and the results are fed back to the patients. In this Department, the knowledge and techniques of the senior staff are passed on freely to the junior staff and this good tradition is maintained in each generation. Based on the concept of not only acquiring more medical knowledge but also treating patients as if they were members of one’s family, the attitude of “good clinicians” who do their best based on cool-headed judgment is passed on.

The Department has a baseball team called the Bears, and each player in each position works together with other players to assure a good team. In this Department, there are many excellent female physicians and a woman's bowling team called the Beauty Bears has been formed. Through such leisure activities, team healthcare in this Department is further strengthened. We hope that the Department of Nephrology will not only provide the best healthcare for patients from all over the country but also continue to announce new research findings on an international level.
