History and status of the department

Doctor Ichiro Tange established Juntendo University's Department of Plastic Surgery in 1965.
Renowned for his masterful surgical technique in the treatment of congenital anomalies, and of cleft lip and palate in particular, Dr. Tange drew numerous visiting doctors to the department from both Japan and abroad. In 1993 he retired his position and was succeeded by Dr. Akira Yanai. Under Dr. Yanai's leadership, the department's faculty and clinical and teaching services have been expanded from a focus on congenital anomalies to include the treatment of various deformities followed by their surgical treatment in other departments., such as orthopedic surgery, neurosurgery, dermatology and otolaryngology. To further this collaboration, the staff of the Department of Plastic Surgery also works in conjunction with the central laboratories of Juntendo University.
