 Department Guide
Our department offers patients with hepatobiliary-pancreatic disease the seamless integration of medical, surgical and radiologic expertise. We have a legacy of close collaboration among clinical specialists, including hepatologists, gastroenterologists, hepatobiliary surgeons, diagnostic and pathology experts, advanced-care nurses, social workers, and patient support staff affiliated with the program.

Since Hepatobiliary Pancreatic department has been founded in October, 2002, our department has performed 626 hepatectomies, 162 pancreatoduodenectomy, and 41 liver transplants (all of which have been living donor transplants using left lobe graft) until February, 2009, and has cared for thousands of patients with Hepatobiliary pancreatic disease. In hospital death after hepatectomy included only two cases (postoperative mortality rate was 0.3%). Five-year post-transplant survival for the same period was 94% for adults, compared to 70.5% nationally, and 91% for pediatric transplants, compared to 83.2 nationally.

 Information About the Residency Program
The mission of the Juntendo University Hospital digestive surgical residency program is to attract the best possible individuals, and to train them through clinical exposure and through formal and informal conferences to be outstanding clinical surgeons.

To accomplish this mission, the department has developed a residency program based on mutual trust and respect between the residents and staff. We feel that surgical residents are mature adults who come to Juntendo University Hospital because of a sincere desire to become excellent digestive surgeons. They are well-motivated and don't require a rigid set of rules. Rather, they are required only to take good care of their patients, carry out their responsibilities with honesty and integrity, and to take responsibility for themselves. We believe this philosophy has resulted in a relaxed atmosphere with excellent esprit de corps.
 Operative Experience
The breadth and depth of surgical experience in the residency program is extensive. All residents obtain more than adequate experience to meet the requirements of the Japan Surgical Society and the experience in complex major cases is particularly strong. Operative experience is progressive and begins in the first year, with advancement in complexity of cases with experience.
 Conferences
While the major thrust of the residency is clinical experience, there are numerous conferences as well. Each service has a weekly morbidity and mortality conference which all residents and staff attend. There are clinical case conferences weekly for Gastrointestinal Surgery, Surgical Oncology, and pathology. The Chief of the Department, Dr. Kawasaki, holds weekly conference on Monday and Thursday morning, both for education and communication.
 Rotations
The surgical residency at digestive surgery of Juntendo University Hospital consists of three clinical years encompassing the broad range of surgery. All residents complete the requirements for certification by the Japan Surgical Society. The residency is one of graded responsibility with adequate supervision at all levels. Due to the flexibility of the residency with respect to research experience, there is some flexibility in clinical rotations, but the accompanying table gives a general outline of rotations at various years. It should be noted that almost all of the rotations are at Juntendo University Hospital, which is thought to improve quality control of the educational experience.
 3rd grade after graduation
Rotation to the department of Hepatobiliary Pancreatic Surgery (4 months), Coloproctological Surgery (4 months), and Esophageal & Gastroenterological Surgery (4 months)
 4th grade after graduation
