History and Introduction
Juntendo university department of medical education was established in 1972. Historically, our department is one of the first medical education departments in Japan. Currently, our department is directed by professor Takashi Dambara and professor Takao Okada. In addition to our medical school, graduate school, 6 related hospitals, and research centers are involved in medical education.
Workshop and Recent Changes
In order to design and provide efficient and practical teaching for our medical students, we have been holding annual workshop for faculty development since 1975. Many faculty members from our university attend this workshop. Medical students and residents have been also invited to this workshop in order hear their opinions and reflect their motivation and opinions. Based on opinions from this workshop, we have been changing current medical education more towards the early exposure of the students to medical field and more emphasis on bedside teaching. Some of the examples are guiding patients in our out patient departments, visiting nursing homes, and helping nurses in hospital wards. Such exposure has bees arranged for the first and the second year medical students. Exercise of history taking and physical examination has been also changed, and some courses are arranged to start in the second year. Current technology such as CBT (computer based testing) and clinical skills laboratories are also available to the students to substitute necessary skills and information. With helps from many staff members in our university, our department will continue to study, analyze, and design mode efficient and practical medical education. We also continue to organize workshops for the faculty members in order to give more attention to recent developments and problems in the fields of medical education and teaching skills. With our works and study, we hope that students will be able to develop necessary skills, enlighten their knowledge, and plan for their carrier.
