International Student and Researcher Event

Tokyo Medical and Dental University (TMDU) held a Setsubun for TMDU and Juntendo University international and Japanese students and researchers on February 3, 2017. The word “setsubun” in Japanese translates into the division of seasons and is now known as the day before the first day. Everyone who attended had the opportunity to make an ehomaki, a Japanese sushi roll, traditionally eaten on the setsubun as a sign of good luck. Afterwards everyone went to Kanda Shrine to experience a mamemaki, another custom thought to bring good luck. The custom involves throwing roasted soybeans, which symbolize the bad omens of the previous year, out of a window, while wishing for good luck in the upcoming year.
