Mission of the Faculty of Health and Sports Science

Juntendo aims to foster future talents for the maintenance, promotion, and restoration of human health following our principle of "Continuous Advancement," as well as our school motto of "JIN" or "Compassion." Juntendo is the only "Comprehensive Health University" in Japan that is comprised of The Faculties of Medicine, Health and Sports Science, Health Care and Nursing, and Health Sciences and Nursing.

In the School of Health and Sports Science, we strive to foster students who want to become health and physical education teachers, special support school teachers, or those who want to work in a sports business company or a health assistance company. To fulfill individual needs, we offer a very well-rounded education that includes many extra-curricular activities and practical training aimed at developing people of complete character. All of these studies will become a power around which the future is built.

At Juntendo, we have a Study Support Committee which is designed to assist all students in achieving their goals. In addition, our Career Support Center provides all student and alumni with valuable life-long career support, especially, students who are eager to apply for a teaching post.

As an education and research system appropriate for a Comprehensive Health University, we grapple with academic issues in collaboration with the faculties of Medicine, Health Care and Nursing, and Health Sciences and Nursing so that students will develop a fundamental knowledge of medical science in order to see sports from a scientific point of view. At the core of the Juntendo theme "the pursuit of health," we endeavor to raise students who possess a broad outlook and highly creative knowledge that satisfies needs in an increasingly complex and diverse era.

To sustain our educational environment and expand it further, we offer the following missions to all students and school personnel:

  1. Self-development
Our department has a variety of study areas based upon "Sports and Health," which are comprised of Sports Medical Science, Coaching Science, Sports Management, and Health Science. Our curricula are flexible enough for students to satisfy their needs and achieve their goals. What is important is that students learn practically. We strongly encourage students to consider how they can apply what they learned in our university to an increasingly complex and diverse society. In addition, we provide students with many opportunities to pursue individual excellence under our educational system. Doing so, they will be able to find a second career once their days as paid athletes are over.
  2. "JIN" and "Continuous Advancement"
What is most important for humans is to have sympathy and understanding of another person's pain and suffering by imagining themselves in another's shoes. This is called "JIN," I exist as you exist, with a heart that considers and cherishes others.
Juntendo is Japan's oldest school of Western medicine, which was founded in 1838. For over 170 years, Juntendo has been producing graduates with the heart of "JIN." Along with this, the basic principle of Juntendo has been "Continuous Advancement," which means that we vow to continue to advance by leaps and bounds in order to contribute to society.
  3. Mission
Under the basic principle of Juntendo "Continuous Advancement," and based on our school motto of "JIN" we work to fulfill individual needs and offer a very well-rounded education for the development of cooperative and comprehensive humanity through the study of "Medical Service," "Sports and Health," and "Nursing" to satisfy individual needs. Although students must acquire interdisciplinary and extensive knowledge and cutting-edge skills, through our systematic curriculum we would like students to keep asking themselves: "What is the most necessary thing for human beings?" That is our mission as a "Comprehensive Health University."
  4. Student Dormitory
All the students in their first year are required to stay in a dormitory for one academic year. This provides opportunities for them to develop deep understanding and sympathy for other people as well as learn responsibility and cooperativeness, things which will be necessary when going out into the world.

We offer the following missions to all prospective students.

"Be sincere"

To be sincere is to act in good faith and treat others with a warm heart. By getting rid of preferences, maintaining an honest heart and facing people and things earnestly one can polish and better oneself as an individual.

"Act with courtesy"

To observe the rules of courtesy is to be polite and show restraint. This is a code of showing respect to others. No matter how much one wants to be respectful to others, one's manners may be inappropriate if one does not know how to act or express them properly. Indeed, no matter how well one shows courtesy on the outside, if one's heart is not full of respect true courtesy cannot exist.

"Cultivate Independence"

Students should insist on their own views enthusiastically and resolve their views on how to act. Without enough independence, a new study will never be developed. To cultivate independence, we would like students to have cooperativeness and openness to compromise, which is essential to social life. In addition, we would like students to build themselves up as an individual in a group and think much of the heart of interdependence.

"Be fair-minded"

Being fair-minded means not having a biased view or acting dishonestly. Seeing things objectively and impartially allows one to act in the spirit of "fair play." Remaining fair-minded is essential to having a strong will and unremitting efforts. In addition, one must have courage to rise against unreasonable demands bravely.

"Be tenacious"

Being tenacious is to overcome a difficulty with perseverance and flexibility. Having physical strength, patience, a strong will, and an exact mind are necessary, if a student is lacking even just one of those elements they cannot in good conscience be entrusted to contribute to the nation and society. For students to realize their goals and make them endure, self-control and bearing one’s hardships patiently are indispensable characteristics.
