Division of Genome Research (SPF Animal Research Facility)

Division of Genome Research (SPF Animal Research Facility: SPF Facility ) was established as one of the divisions of the Center for Geriatric Medicine in 2002, whose surface area is approximately 200 m2. At the SPF Facility, there are six mouse or rat rooms which can house approximately 4,200 mice, one procedure rooms(P2 level), one washing/sterilizing room, etc. The entry into the SPF Facility is controlled by a face reader to maintain security. SPF ( specific pathogen free ) animals mean animals that are free of specified pathogens, and they are kept under the strict microbiological control. Clean air filtered through HEPA ( high-efficiency particulate air ) filter is supplied to the animal housing area. All the materials are introduced into the animal housing area through an autoclave or pass boxes after sterilization or disinfection. The users/experimenters are required to wash and disinfect hands, and to wear sterilized coveralls, hood, gloves, socks, etc. before entering the animal housing area. At the entrance to the animal housing area, there is an air shower. The line of flow for persons and materials in the SPF Facility is of one way from the air shower to the exit to maintain microbiological cleanliness. For the moment, mice and rats are kept such as genetically modified animals including transgenic/knockout lines and animal models for human age-associated diseases, etc. The SPF Facility also maintains all of the necessary micromanipulation equipment including microinjection microscopes with Piezo impact drive unit and micromanipulators. It is possible to generate transgenic/knockout mice, to cryopreserve embryos and spermatozoa from transgenic/knockout lines or to clean animals using in vitro fertilization/embryo transfer techniques to remove specific pathogen in the procedure room. The SPF Facility is an approved area for recombinant DNA experimentation. All the animal experiments are carried out in compliance with "Guidelines for Animal Experimentation, Juntendo University School of Medicine".

We believe that you will get a wonderful opportunity for studying cutting-edges of neurosciences in our laboratory. Should you have any query, please, feel free to make a contact with us.
