Introduction
The missions of the Department of Internal Medicine and Rheumatology at Juntendo University School of Medicine are to provide outstanding cutting edge clinical care, to advance the discipline through clinical and basic research, and to train the next generation of academic rheumatologists.
We provide comprehensive and consultative clinical care to patients with rheumatic diseases in the outpatient and inpatient settings. Outpatient service programs of the department accommodate approximately 4000 patient visits per month. An inpatient consultation program provides service to about 100 patients each month. We provide care to patients with a wide spectrum illnesses that characterize the rheumatic diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus and the vasculitides. Our clinical services provide and have helped develop cutting edge new therapies.
The research programs span the spectrum of the most fundamental research questions that underlie the pathogenesis of rheumatic diseases to research involving clinical trials of new therapies. We are experiencing a large expansion of our research programs including cellular and humoral immunity and genetics related to pathogenesis of the rheumatic diseases. These comprehensive research programs are being funded by a wide range of sources. The research activities of Professor Takasaki focus on the study of the molecular mechanisms of autoimmune response to autoantigens targeted by antinuclear antibodies. In addition, we are participating in several basic and clinical research groups of the Ministry of Health and Welfare of Japan.
The educational programs of the division involve teaching activities in the medical school, graduate school and residency programs and at the subspecialty fellowship level. In particular, Professor Takasaki is a chairman of Department of Internal Medicine who is responsible for the management of the residency programs. We also actively participate in continuing medical educational programs for physicians in practice. Our highly regarded subspecialty training program in rheumatology aims to produce outstanding scientists and physicians in the subspecialty of rheumatology.
