Undergraduate Medical Education
What you should learn in the lecture and bedside learning in our department.

Endocrine system is indispensable to regulate the homeostasis of human. The students will learn how the Endocrine system controls the rest of the body. The students will learn about the different endocrine glands and how the hormones they release can have effects on the cells. Eventually, the students will appreciate the many feedback loops for strict hormone regulation.

Now, the most common diseases in clinical practice is diabetes. In general, 10% of the patients in hospital are considered to have diabetes, thus, in Juntendo hospital, there are always approximately 100 diabetic patients. Thus, it is very important to have a good understanding of the general management of diabetes and pathophysiology of the acute and chronic complications of diabetes.

The secondary common disease is thyroid disease. However, only a few patietns are in hospital. The students may have rare opportunity to see the patients with thyroid, though the disease is very common disease in out patients. The common thyroid diseases are hyperthyroidism, hypothyroidism,nodules, goitre, and thyroiditis. The students should have a good understanding of the interpretation of laboratory test of thyroid.

Pituitary tumors and the related disease are not so common, but in general practice, you have to notice these disorders. The students will learn to interpret the result of loading test of each hormone.

Adrenal disease is uncommon but is important to recognize as it may be life threatening.

Hypercalcemia and Hypocalcemia are also the diseases of our department.

In addition, the patients with hypercholesterolemia and obesity is increasing. These disease are also in our field.
