Q&A

I live in a country outside Japan. Can I receive a medical consultation at Juntendo University Hospital?

We accept patients from other countries (foreign nationals who do not have Japanese public health insurance). In principle, we ask all patients to follow our appointment system, so please make inquiries through a medical coordinator to the Department of International Healthcare. For detailed information on how to make an appointment, refer to the documents “Reservation Clinic for International Outpatients” and “Second Opinion Service for International Outpatients.”

If you are in Japan for a short stay and require urgent medical treatment, please contact Department of International Healthcare for a consultation. Our General Medicine Clinic, as well as select outpatient clinics offer services in English primarily for acute care evaluation and treatment for tourists and business people traveling or working in Japan. (We ask that patients seeking treatment for pre- existing and chronic conditions make appointments through a medical coordination service.) The General Medicine Clinic accepts patients during clinic business hours from 8:30am to 3pm, Monday through Friday.

This service applies to English-speaking patients only; other languages may be added in the future as resources become available. When you come to the hospital, please bring your passport, and as much medical information as you can from your home country or from local clinics of Japan, such as medical summaries or previous test results. We accept medical documents in English. For other languages, please translate them into Japanese or English. Please note that if we are unable to treat you in the General Medicine Clinic, nor able to provide an English source for specialty care, you may be asked to seek treatment at another medical institution or provide your own Japanese-English interpreter.

What is the procedure for international patients on the day of the examination?

If you have an appointment at the Reservation Clinic, please directly go to the Reservation Clinic on the 3rd floor of Building B.
International patients who have an appointment for the Second Opinion Service should go to the Medical Concierge Service (Second Opinion Service) on the 2nd floor of Buidling No.1 directly. Please inquire with your medical coordinator for detailed information.
If you require urgent medical treatment, please contact the Department of International Healthcare for a consultation.

What are the fees if I do not have Japanese public health insurance?

Starting on April 1, 2018, international patients who do not have Japanese public health insurance are charged at a rate of 30 yen per 1 medical remuneration point (all patients with Japanese public health insurance are charged at a rate of 10 yen per medical remuneration point).

Can private medical insurance from other countries be used?

For outpatient services (outpatient clinics and Reservation Clinic), full payment on the day of your visit is required. Hospitalization expenses are to be paid at discharge at the Cashier or via bank transfer. Reimbursement of any medical expenses with your private insurance company is expected to be submitted/claimed by the patient. Please refer to Regarding Medical Documents Issuance for information regarding necessary documents for reimbursement.

I want to have surgery done at Juntendo University Hospital. How much will it cost?

For a first visit, apply for an appointment at the Reservation Clinic through a medical coordinator. A cost estimate will be provided only if your examining doctor agrees that a surgery requiring hospitalization is warranted. In principle, we provide cost estimate only to inpatients before hospitalization. Costs differ greatly depending on the type of surgery, length of hospital stay, and type of room. We ask for your understanding.

Can payment be made with a credit card?

We accept Visa, Mastercard, JCB, UC, American Express, Diners Club, Discover, and UnionPay credit cards.

Is it possible to issue a receipt in English?

The receipt of Outpatient and Inpatient is available in English. If you need it, please ask the staff at the counter at the time of payment. Please note that the itemized receipt is only available in Japanese. We thank you for your understanding.
