Application for Ph.D. by Thesis Submission

When applying for a doctoral degree (Class B) by thesis submission without having completed the Graduate School Doctoral Program, please submit the necessary documents after checking the following guidelines.

Eligibility & How to Submit an Application

Individuals who have been involved in research related to Health and Sports Science continuously under the supervisor of faculty in this Graduate School may be eligible to apply to the Graduate School for a doctoral degree (Class B) by thesis submission.
Individuals wishing to apply are asked to please make an inquiry through a faculty supervisor willing to serve as a reference.

Foreign Language Examination

When applying for a degree, applicants must first pass a foreign language examination. Additionally, individuals for whom Japanese is not a native language may have to sit a Japanese examination as well as an English examination.
Examinations shall in principle be scheduled to take place four times during the academic year (in April, July, October, and January).

Conditions for the Degree Application Thesis

Papers eligible for submission as degree application theses shall meet the following conditions:
1 Must be an academic article either published or accepted for publication in a
peer-reviewed journal.
2 Must be sole work of the applicant. In the case of co-authorship, the applicant
must be the lead author.
3 Must have been published within three years of application.
4 Must specify that the applicant is affiliated with our university.

Application Deadline and Necessary Documents

Applications for the degree are as a rule accepted twice a year (in April and October), with the deadline for submission of documents being the 15th of the month (or the previous day where either of these dates falls on a weekend).

Public Presentation

Prior to examination of the doctoral thesis, applicants are expected to make a public presentation on the topic of their thesis. Guidelines for such presentation are to be determined separately.

Publication of Examination Results

Examiners’ reports for theses that are awarded degrees will be made publicly available through the Juntendo Academic Information Repository.
