The Department was established in 1968 by Emiritus Professor Keijiro Suruga who was the first Professor and Head as the first Department of Pediatric Surgery in a medical institution in Japan. The second Professor and Head was Takeshi Miyano who successfully developed the Department according to two mottos-�gtraining staff to provide medical care from an international perspective�h and �gproviding patients with optimal and safe medical care�h. Currently, the third Professor and Head, Atsuyuki Yamataka, leads a dedicated team of 22, comprising 7 fully board accredited specialist surgeons who aim to constantly provide clinical services that are �gsafe and even less invasive�h.
The Department of Pediatric General and Urogenital Surgery specializes in treating conditions in children from babies to teenagers that can only be cured by surgery. All manner of surgery other than cardiothoracic and neurosurgery is performed in the Department, which boasts the most number of operations per year and the most neonatal patients. Annual operations top 1300 cases, and the number of neonates is over 75, meaning there is a wealth of experience to be gained from such a large number of cases.
One of the outstanding features of the training program offered by the Department is the opportunity to �gexperience the world first hand through overseas placements�h. Almost all staff have studied overseas, and this allows the Department to maintain its international standing clinically, educationally and as a research center because of exposure to international medical information.
The Department is well aware that it must contribute both socially and medically, and conducts much research that has been published widely as original papers and reports. There are a variety of topics being researched by the Department at internationally recognized levels. |

| The Department�fs approach is to expose young doctors to a wide spectrum of conditions in the field of pediatric general and urogenital surgery by allowing them to attend outpatient clinics and hospital ward rounds. Hospital tutorials are conducted for each type of condition generally encountered-a style that enhances understanding. �gAcquisition of surgical skills�h and �gcase presentations�h are taught in detail.
Medical students are taught generally about various conditions in the field of pediatric general and urogenital surgery at the bedside, an experience that is inspirational, and maintains motivation to study pediatric surgery after graduation.
Medical student teaching
Observation of surgery is the core of medical student teaching in the Department, but it is also supplemented by learning how to manage patients patients in the intensive are unit and neonatal intensive care unit as well as procedure in the emergency room. If interested, students can also assist with animal experiments, learn about surgical instruments and learn surgical skills.
Final year medical students may choose an option to become more actively involved in patient care, and have the opportunity of learning more surgical skills with trainee doctors.
