Research

Research Policies/Mottos at Juntendo University School of Medicine Postgraduate Institute of Ophthalmology

1) Research themes are devised taking feedback to clinical practice into consideration.
2) Scientific thinking is acquired as a routine practice.
3) Efficient research is conducted in cooperation with collaborative laboratories.
4) Post graduate students from overseas have been accepted.

Research themes

Main basic research is divided into 7 groups:
1) Genomics and molecular biology group
Genomic research is conducted to detect candidate genes responsible for hereditary chorioretinopathy, glaucoma, corneal dystrophy, and optic nervous diseases and to identify the structures and functions of responsible proteins to make breakthroughs in genetic therapy.
2) Corneal research group
Cell motility analysis after keratoplasty using GFP transgenic animals.
Genetic and biological analysis of keratoconus.
Pathophisiology of non-infectious kerataitis.
Research for corneal epithelial stem cells.
3) Ocular inflammation research group
The role of choroidal mast cells for intraocular inflammatory diseases.
The cell death-induced inflammation for the pathophisiology of retinitis pigmentosa.
4) Vitreous enzyme analysis group
Biochemistry research is conducted on the kinetics of the intravitreous extracellular matrix after treatment with enzymes, targeting the development of safe, effective surgical procedure for the vitreous body.
5) Ocular allergy research group
Pathophysiological analysis of severe chronic allergic conjunctivitis.
Genetic predisposition of ocular atopic diseases.
6)Glaucoma research group
Pathophysiological analysis and genetics of glucocorticoid-induced glaucoma.
7) Public health and blindness control group
Statistical approaches and field work are conducted to refine medical service systems in underdeveloped countries, to devise measures for controlling of lifestyle diseases in advanced countries, and to make proposals on medical economics in advanced countries.
